AK4 Ringed Plover

One of a series of small, embroidered studies featuring birds from the British Trust for Ornithology Red list.
This hand stitched ringed plover is stitched into a copy of a vintage ornithological record card written by John McGeoch. The exhibition features a number of these cards in backgrounds.
This distinctive, small wader with their black ‘bandit’ _eye-masks and orange legs can be found around most of our coastline, though is less common in the SW of England and West Wales. Inland breeding also occurs, with pairs choosing disused flooded gravel pits, river margins and, in Ireland, harvested peat bogs.
Ringed plovers that nest as far away as Greenland and Canada fly through the UK on migration.
