Introduction to Proggy Rug Making with Sally Light - Monday 10th February 1.30 - 4.30pm

In this short Introduction to Proggy Rug Making, explore the creative and fun rag rag technique known as 'proggy', ‘peggy’, ‘clippy’. ‘or ‘clootie’, depending on where you come from!

Working on small sample piece you will go home with lots of ideas and techniques under your belt to enable you to complete larger projects. Historically the proggy technique was used to create shaggy, textural rag rugs in homes up and down the country before the days of fitted carpets! It is done by prodding short clippings of waste fabric (often from old worn garments) through a hessian base using a simple tool made from a whittled down wooden dolly peg.

Come and find out why there is mini revival of this fun traditional thrift craft. Come with a design in mind - or none! For Sally will share with you easy ways of coming up with lovely designs of your own - even if you think you can't draw!

Sally will provide all materials and tools to use on the day - though you are welcome to bring along your own fabrics as well if they wish (stiff materials not recommended though).

Sally Light is the textile artist and maker behind Bodkin Beak. She has a degree in Creative writing and a rich experience of working in textile trades.Since being awarded a Somerset Art Works Creative Pathways Bursary in 2023, she has been developing her textile practice. With sustainability in mind, and a compulsion to create from the waste cloth and yarns she had access to through her previous paid employment as a mender in a weaving mill, Sally has rediscovered her love for rag rug making. She relishes using her hands to create new work from materials that were bound for shoddy mills or landfill.

Forgot to include in the blurb that I will provide tools to use on the day and lots of lovely waste materials for people to use in their pieces (no extra charge). But participants are free to bring their own fabrics as well if they wish (though stiff fabrics aren't recommended).
