The reduction printmaking process, unlike multi-block printing, uses only one block of lino to produce a finished image. It can be a challenging discipline as the block is destroyed with each stage of the process. But with careful planning the end results can be very satisfying.
This workshop aims to demystify reduction printing by enabling participants to create a simple image using a limited colour palette and is suitable for entry-level printmakers or those with more experience wishing to understand the basics of reduction printmaking.
By the end of the day, you will understand how to: use lino gouges, cut a design from a lino block, use the reduction printmaking process, overlay inks, effectively roll ink onto a block, transfer an image to lino, register an image to paper using Ternes Burton registration method and apply the image to paper using hand burnishing.
You will have created one or more small cloudscape prints using the lino reduction printmaking process.
Using a selection of pre-designed templates and a restricted colour palette participants will transfer, cut and print a cloudscape from designs provided by Steve Manning.
Participants will need to bring:
• an apron or similar
• pencils (HB)
Steve will provide:
• examples of reduction prints and visual aids illustrating the stages of the process
• pre-designed cloudscapes for participants to transfer to lino
• tools and materials
• lino and paper for the production of one cloudscape print
• additional lino and paper for a second cloudscape will be chargeable on the day.
