Botanical paper cut workshop using geological maps and found papers

As an Artist and illustrator I have always been inspired by nature and employ a range of different techniques to respond to various aspects of the natural world.

I have developed a way to utilise the found colour from maps and atlases to create collages of plants and insects. The natural contours and flowing colours of maps mirror the environment on a macro level. I have found this characteristic a great way to express the shape and colour of flora and fauna on a more micro level. I am also recycling materials that are becoming obsolete in the modern world and it’s a fantastic way to recycle them.

I have illustrated books about the natural world by authors such as Lia Leendertz and Francis Tophill and have created illustrations for publications by the Resurgence Trust and Simple things magazine. I am also an artist who exhibits widely creating paintings, paper cuts, prints and ceramics.

As well as working on maps and found paper I also work with them. Matisse used scissors to ‘paint with paper’ and Mrs Delany (1700-1788), an 18th century widow who was an amateur botanist and made over 1000 stunning ‘paper mosaics’ of plants and flowers. You can see some of her work in the British Museum.

What we shall do

In this workshop we will observe seasonal plants and flowers from life and then translate these into delicate paper cuts which will then be carefully arranged and applied to mount board to create a final piece. The collages will have a 3D element that will cast shadows to create depth.

You could bring your own home grown flowers from your garden, allotment or from walks in the country side. In July we will have an abundance of shape, colour and texture to draw on. Flowers and plants will be available on the day if you cannot bring some of your own.

What we will use

Old geological maps, atlases, and other printed ephemera. We will use tracing paper, pencils and very sharp surgical scalpels. I will change blades and provide cutting mats and provide health and safety guidance to ensure you can use your tools with confidence. There will be scissors, conservation glue and all the equipment we will need for a successful outcome.
