LN194 Orange-vented Mason Bee

Bee194 the Orange-vented Mason Bee or Osmia Leaiana made for the last FIFTY BEES exhibition which took place in 2020.

The bee is created from needlefelted wool and stitches created using vintage threads. It is built into a lovely old bakelite makeup pot.

It collects pollen from thistles, knapweeds and hawk’s-beard, and nectar from crane’s-bill, brambles and green alkanet and lines each cell with leaf mastic, a kind of ‘pesto.’ It arranges the cells linearly along tunnels it makes in wooden posts or in cardboard tubes provided by wildlife gardeners.
